A great place to begin your exploration of the Dominican Republic is the capital,Santo Domingo – the first European city in the Western hemisphere. The city is a fabulous mix of sixteenth century dwellings, imposing late medieval palaces and fortresses, set amidst a refreshingly non-geometric street-grid. The city was recognized as the cradle of European civilization in the New World and UNESCO has declared the Colonial City to be a world heritage site.

Visit the beautiful caves of Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes). Aferwards, we will go for a panoramic drive through the city along the waterfront and stop at the President's Palace (La Casa de Gobierno).

Our next stop will be the Colonial Zone which is the old part of Santo Domingo. Here we will visit the Alcazár de Colón - a palace built to house the court of Christopher Columbus' son, Diego, who was appointed the first Viceroy of the Indies. Built of native coral and rock on the shores of the Ozama River, Alcazar de Colon served as the center of the Spanish court.

Lunch is served at the restaurant Atarazana where the menu consists of typical, Dominican food: Rice, beans, meat and salad incl. one drink (e.g. red/white wine, soft drink, fruit punch, water or rum & coke).

After lunch we will take a walk down Calle de Las Damas, visit the Casas Reales Museum, the National Panteón, and a typical Dominican market (Mercado Modelo). Our final stop will be at the first Cathedral of the "New World". Afterwards we will have approx. 30 - 60 min for shopping.

What to bring: Comfortable clothes and walking shoes, camera and money for shopping.

Please note that for visiting certain monuments (e.g. the Cathedral), dress code is required, meaning no sleeveless shirts or above-knee length skirts/shorts.
