Puerto Plata was founded in 1502 by Christopher Columbus and is a city just waiting for you to discover it. With a visit to the Amber Gallery, the Brugal Rum distillery and the San Felipe fortress you will learn about the history of this oldest city on the north coast.

After sightseeing in Puerto Plata you then head off to the town of Sosua, where here you can either try your hand at haggling at one of the many beach side market stalls. Or if you want you can relax on one of the most beautiful beaches on the north coast, with its golden sand and clear waters. A day out to get yourself orientated with the local area.

A rich history is certainly one of the things the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata can boast of with pride. More commonly known as Puerto Plata, this enchanting resort community takes its name from the inspiration of famous explorer Christopher Columbus.

Upon seeing the simmering coastal waters here during a glorious sunset, Columbus compared them to the enticing gleam of silver. Puerto Plata ( Port of Silver) stuck as part of the colony's name after its official founding in 1502 by then governor of the island, Nicolas de Ovanda. Just east of the present city, you can still see the remains of the original colony first established in this area just after Columbus' visit, called Isabela.

Puerto Plata, located on the northeastern shore of the island, is the first choice for beach lovers visiting the Dominican Republic. Known as the Amber Coast, this region is one of the world's most important suppliers of the precious gem. Be sure to pay a visit to the world-famous Amber Museum, housing some remarkable examples of this stone. Of course, the North Coast also boasts more than 75 miles of gleaming beaches, as well as mountains soaring into breathtaking vistas.

At the turn of this century, Puerto Plata was a bustling waterfront town with a large European population. Today, it hosts the many travelers who come to see its historic sites, experience the old world charm and try the cable car lift to the botanical gardens atop Mount Isabel de Torres. The modern Playa Dorada complex with its resorts and plentiful attractions and Sosua are the most popular areas serving tourists. Cabarete is also growing in popularity, and remains the first choice among windsurfing enthusiasts.

Soak in the rich cultural heritage found in the frequent carnivals and festivals where fast-paced music echoes in the streets and everyone swings to the national dance, the merengue. Taste some of the most exquisite dining to be had anywhere. Try your luck at one of the exciting casinos. Get active at the windsurfing capital of the world, Cabarete.
